Until now,The last of usspent a lot of time introducing us to Joel (Peter Paschal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey). But they're far from the only notable survivors in this story. Ever since the HBO series announced itNick Offermanwould play Bill, the fans were keen to see how the belovedParks and Recreationstar captured this survivor. And in everything he does, Offerman has not disappointed.spoilers forThe last of uson HBO after that point.

Long Long Time picks up right after the events of Infected. After the death of Tess (Anna Torv), Joel and Ellie decide to continue their quest to bring Ellie to the Fireflies. And that means gathering supplies from Joel's old friends Bill and Frank (Murray Bartlett).

In a way, Bill and Frank have already appeared in this series. At the end of "When You're Lost in the Darkness," Joel's radio played an '80s song (Depeche Mode's "Never Let Me Down Again"). As Ellie correctly deduced, this is the signal for danger, and the person on the other side of that signal was none other than Bill, the duo's smuggling connection. As they hike to Bill and Frank's town, Joel tries to hide a pile of burned skeletons from his young companion, but it's too late. Ellie sees the horrific evidence of the outbreak's early days. Joel has to tell her the truth: After the initial infection, the military rounded up people from smaller towns, claiming they were taking them to quarantine zones. That was a lie. Many people were shot on sight, and most were not (yet) infected.

The camera then zooms in on a ceiling with rainbows, triggering a flashback. As a woman snuggles her baby in the same blanket, soldiers force her into her truck and Bill (Offerman) watches the scene from his bunker. This transition from the mass grave is more than just an interesting transition. It speaks to the care with which the co-creators of the series have workedNeil DruckmanAndCraig Mazinapproached every element of this show.

"There's a bit of extra resonance later when we see Ellie walking around. We were with these people. We've seen it in the making. It means something more to us," Druckmann told Decider at the venue. "She has the luxury of being a 14-year-old kid and never knowing a world that wasn't like that. It's an odd idea to call it a luxury, but she doesn't carry that pain, that nostalgia, that loss, because she never knew any of those things."

This is where one of the biggest differences beginsThe last of usgame as well as one of the best performances of Nick Offerman's career. Instead of a story about a mad survivor, Bill's story becomes a love story.

Thanks to his bunker, Bill managed to evade the military. It doesn't take long before he's turning Lincoln, Massachusetts into his own little paradise, complete with electricity and sumptuous meals. Bill seems lucky enough to face the end of the world alone. At least that's how it is until Frank falls into one of his traps. The last of usanswers many Bill-related questions raised in-game. We see how Bill met Frank, an intruder who eventually became his romantic partner. We see them arguing, laughing, arguing and caring about each other. We learn that Frank Bill almost lost in a failed raider attack. We even get to see Joel and Tess (Anna Torv) meet Bill and Frank. It's all very cute. And you know what that means: life is about to get grim. No one is allowed to be happy on this show.

How do Bill and Frank die?The last of uson HBO?

As "Long Long Time" jumps through the lives of Bill and Frank, it becomes clear that Frank is terminally ill. Instead of waiting out his death, Frank chooses to die on his own terms. He tells Bill he's going to take a deadly amount of pills with his wine that night.

"I'm not going to tell you that speaking every day was a wonderful gift from God - I've had a lot of bad days. I've had bad days with you too," says Frank. "But I've had more good days with you than anyone else. So give me a good day.”

After arguing for a moment, Bill relents, but not before making a small change to Frank's plan. Bill mixes a lethal dose into his own wine. Bill and Frank die in their beds in front of the camera, united in death as in life.

Will Bill and Frank die?The last of usSpiel?

As nice as Frank and Bill's deaths are, that's not how things played out in the original game. While it's true that Bill and Frank were a couple, they didn't die together. Instead, Frank left Bill after growing fed up with his partner's refusal to leave Lincoln.

After leaving Bill behind, Joel later finds an absolutely devastating situationNote from Frank. Believed to have been written after Frank became infected, the note includes such gems as "I want you to know I've always hated your guts" and "Trying to leave this town will kill me." Still better than spending another day with you.” It's the ultimate form of rejection, a man happily embracing his own death instead of spending another moment with his former lover. But instead of copying that grim ending,The last of us' Showrunners took Episode 3 as an opportunity to try and understand more about Bill.

“[Bill] created a safe haven. So let's remove for a moment the threat of those things we feared in the first two episodes - oppression and the end of the world. Here's this little thing that's perfect and delicate," Craig Mazin told Decider. "It just became this opportunity to both tell a story about the passage of time - what happens between the eruption and now - and to examine the themes embedded within itThe last of usLet's get back to the game, which has themes about love and the different ways we love and how love can be both beautiful and dangerous and dark.

(Video) LAST OF US Episode 3 Breakdown: Every Easter Egg & Ending Explained

Druckmann noted that Bill's storyline was Mazin's "baby." “In a way, it's quite different from the game. But other than that, it's extremely faithful to the game," said Druckmann. "Bill comes in and saves you, so you bond with him in-game, which makes for addicting gameplay that wouldn't work that well for a show. There is also a philosophical question in the game, what does it mean to survive? What does it mean to survive when you have nothing left?”

The episode is intended to be a back-and-forth between Bill and Frank: Bill as someone who is above all dedicated to survival, and Frank as someone who actually sees the beauty of life. "The brilliant thing Craig did with the story is to say what if Bill eventually changed in a way that he didn't have in the game? That's very beautiful because so much of the story is the contrast of 'Here are the wonderful things that love can lead to and here is sometimes the terrible loss or terrible violence that love can come from,'" he said printman .
